The Whole-House Generator Installation Process
Knowing the sequence makes it easier to compare proposals and understand what must happen before the generator is ready for an outage.
1. Define what you want backed up
Start with priorities: air conditioning, refrigeration, lighting, medical equipment, well pumps, internet, cooking appliances or broader whole-home coverage.
2. Assess electrical demand
The home's loads are reviewed to determine generator capacity and whether load management will be used. Large motor-driven equipment may have starting demands that differ from normal running load.
3. Select generator and transfer equipment
The generator, automatic transfer switch and load-management components should be compatible with the home's service and the chosen backup strategy.
4. Plan placement and fuel
Equipment location affects clearances, nearby openings, access, fuel routing and permit documentation. Fuel availability can influence whether natural gas or propane is practical.
5. Complete permits and installation
Required permit documents are submitted, then electrical, fuel and equipment work is performed according to the approved scope and manufacturer requirements.
6. Inspect, test and commission
After required inspections, the system is tested for startup, transfer operation and load behavior. The homeowner should know the basic controls, maintenance schedule and what to do if the system reports a fault.
