Automatic vs. Manual Generator Transfer Switch
Both devices are designed to transfer a building's power source safely, but they serve different operating styles.
Automatic transfer switch
An ATS can detect utility conditions and transfer the connected electrical system according to the standby generator's control logic. This is the common approach for permanently installed automatic standby systems.
Manual transfer switch
A manual transfer arrangement requires a person to operate the switching process. It can be appropriate in other generator applications but does not provide the same automatic outage response as a standby generator with an ATS.
Choose transfer equipment as part of the whole system
The correct design depends on generator type, electrical service, desired loads and applicable installation requirements—not simply whether one switch style costs less.
